Straight (upholding / stable / fluent), so that it warns (people) of a severe torment which is about to come from Him, and announces the good news to the believers who perform righteous deeds that for them is a good reward (Paradise).
(You grieve so much over them that) if they do not believe in this Word (the Quran), you may perhaps lose your life in grief over them (that is: do not grieve so much).
Indeed We have made the things on the earth as the means for its (the earth’s) adornment, so that We may try them (people) as to which of them performs righteous deeds.
When these youths took refuge in the cave, they said, ‘O our Rabb! Grant us Mercy from Yourself, and provide for us (the means of) guidance in our affair.’
We narrate to you their account accurately. Indeed, they were a few youths who had believed in their Rabb, and We granted them more guidance.
And We had connected (strengthened) their hearts when they stood up (for the Deen) and said, ‘Our Rabb is the Rabb of the heavens and the earth. We will certainly not accept and invoke anyone as Ilaha except Him; for if we did that, indeed we would then utter a great absurdity.
These people of our nation have set up deities other than Him (Allah). Why do these people not bring a clear proof regarding them (deities)? So who can be a greater wrongdoer than he who fabricates a lie against Allah?
And when you have separated from them and their deities, except Allah, go and live in the cave. Your Rabb will spread His Mercy for you and will provide for you the means of success in this affair.’
And (O addressee!) when the sunlight comes up, you will see that it remains away to the right side of their cave, and when it goes down, it keeps away to their left side, and they were in a spacious part in it (the cave). This is from among the Signs of Allah. Only he whom Allah grants guidance finds the path. And the one whom He sends astray, then you will certainly not find any helper, guide for him.
And (O addressee!) you perceive them as awake, although they were asleep. And We turned them on their sides - (sometimes) on the right and (sometimes) on the left; and their dog was on the threshold stretching out his forelegs. (O addressee) had you peeped to see them, you would have turned back and fled from them, and you would have been filled with awe of them.
And in this way We woke them up, so that they may inquire from one another. One of the speakers among them said, ‘How long have you remained here?’ They said, ‘We have remained here a day or a little less than a day.’ They (the others) said, ‘Your Rabb alone knows how long you have remained. So send one of you to the city with this coin, then let him see which eatables are wholesome thus bring you some food from it to. And he should return slowly (cautiously) so as not to let anyone know about you.
If these people get a hold over you (come to know about you), they will surely stone you or revert you to their religion, and in that case you will never prosper (never be successful).’
And in this way We made them (the people) aware of them (of their situation), so that they may know that the Promise of Allah is true, and that there is no doubt about Qiyamah. At that time, people (of that era) were disputing among themselves about their affair, they said, ‘Construct a building over these people (on their cave). Their Rabb is well informed of their state.’ Those people who had authority in their matter said, ‘We will certainly build a Masjid over them (over their cave).’
Now they (the people) will say, ‘They are three, the fourth is their dog,’ and they (some) will say, ‘They are five, the sixth is their dog.’ They are making an unconfirmed statement. And they will say, ‘They are seven and their dog is the eighth.’ Say, ‘My Rabb knows best their number (exactly).’ Very few people know them (their number), so do not discuss any more than a passing mention about them, and do not ask any of these people about them.
But include Allah’s Will in it (say ‘Insha Allah’). And when you forget, remember your Rabb and say, ‘I have hope that my Rabb will tell me (as proof of Prophethood) something of guidance even nearer than this.’
And those people remained (in a state of sleep) in their cave for three hundred (300) years and nine (9) more years (remained for a total of three hundred and nine (309) years).
Say, ‘Allah knows best their period of stay. For Him are the Unseen matters of the heavens and the earth. What an Excellent Seer and what an Excellent Hearer He is! They have no Manager of affairs except Him, and nor does He share His Command with anyone.
And keep reciting (before the people) the Book of your Rabb, which is sent to you through Revelation. None can change His Words (Promises). And you will definitely not find any place of refuge except with Him.
And restrain yourself with the people who invoke their Rabb at dawn and dusk (meaning continuously) seeking His Pleasure, and do not let the thought of the glitter of worldly life distract your attention from them, and do not obey the person whose heart We have caused to be neglectful of Our Remembrance, and he follows his desires and his affair has exceeded limits.
And say, ‘(This Deen is) The Truth from your Rabb. Then whoever wills let him believe, and whoever wills let him remain an unbeliever.’ Indeed We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire whose tent-like walls will be surrounding them. And if they cry out (with thirst), their cry will be answered with water as (hot) as molten copper, which will roast the faces. What a terrible water it will be, and what a terrible place it will be!
For such people are Gardens of Eternity, under whose direction streams flow, there they will be adorned with gold bracelets, and they will wear garments of fine and thick green silk, there they will be reclining on couches. What an excellent reward and what an excellent abode!
And narrate to them the example of two persons. To one of them We had given two gardens of grapes and had surrounded them both with date-palms, and We had produced crops between the two.
And he (that person) kept receiving the produce (from them). (One day) while speaking to his friend he said to him, ‘I am greater than you in wealth and also more respectable in terms of men.’
And I do not think that Qiyamah will come to pass, and even if I do get returned to my Rabb, I will certainly be granted a better place than this on reaching there.’
His friend who was conversing with him, said, ‘Do you disbelieve in Him (The Being), Who created you (initially) from clay, then from sperm, and then fashioned you as a complete man?
And when you entered your garden why did you not say: only that which Allah wills comes to pass, there is no power (in anyone) except with Allah’s Help (Ma sha’a Allah la Quwwata illa Billah), if you see me inferior to yourself in wealth and in children?
It is nothing strange that my Rabb may grant me a garden better than yours and send a calamity from the sky on this (garden of yours), then it becomes a barren field.
And his fruit (wealth and income) was encompassed (by torment). And then he was left wringing his hands over what he had spent on it (the garden), and it (the garden) lay (fallen) on its frames, and he said, ‘Alas, would that I had not associated anyone as partner with my Rabb!’
And cite for them the similitude of worldly life, (it is) like water which We rained from the sky. The earth received vegetation from it, which then turned to powder which the winds scatter about. And Allah has Power over everything.
Wealth and sons (children) are the adornment of the worldly life. And the enduring righteous deeds are better in respect of reward with your Rabb, and also better in respect of hope.
And the Day We move the mountains (remove them), and you see the earth as an exposed plain, and We will gather them (the people), then We will not leave out a single one of them.
And all of them will be presented before your Rabb in rows. (It will be said), ‘Indeed you have come to Us just as We had created you the first time. Rather you had thought that We had not appointed any time (of Qiyamah) for you.’
And the Book (of Deeds) will be laid (open) and you will see the criminals fearing what is (written) in it and will say, ‘Woe to us! What a Book is this that leaves out neither a minor thing (sin) nor a major thing but has recorded it?’ And they will find present all the deeds they had performed. And your Rabb will not wrong anyone.
And when We commanded the angels, ‘Prostrate yourselves before Adam (Alaihi as-Salam).’ So all of them prostrated themselves, but Iblees (did not). He was of the Jinn, and he disobeyed the Command of his Rabb. So will you take him and his progeny (minions) as your friends instead of Me, whereas they are your enemies? For the wrongdoers (the friendship of Shayateen) is an evil exchange.
I did not call them at the time of creating the heavens and the earth nor at the time of their own creation, and nor was I such as to take misleaders as My helpers.
On the Day when He (Allah) will say, ‘Call those whom you considered Our partners.’ So they will call them, but they will not respond to them, and We will create a place of doom between them.
And what stopped people from believing and from asking forgiveness from their Rabb, when guidance had come to them, except that they (should wait to) face the same situation as the earlier ones or that the torment confronts them face to face.
And We send Messengers only to announce glad news and to warn (of the torment). And those who are unbelievers dispute by (the authority of) falsehood so as to slide (displace) the truth with it, and they have made a joke of Our Ayaat and that which (the torment) they are warned of.
And who can be a greater wrongdoer than the one who was instructed with his Rabb’s Message and he turned his face from it and forgot what (deeds) he has sent forward by his own hands. We have indeed placed veils over their hearts, so that they may not understand it (the truth), and (placed) heaviness in their ears (so that they may not hear). And if you call them to the right path, they will never ever come to the right path.
And your Rabb is Forgiving, Merciful. If He starts to seize them for their deeds, He would send torment upon them immediately. Rather He has appointed a time for them, from which (from whose torment) they will not find any refuge.
And these are the townships (that lie deserted). We annihilated them (their inhabitants) when they did wrong. And We had appointed a time for their destruction.
And when Musa (Alaihi as-Salam) said to his servant, ‘I will continue my journey until I do not reach the confluence of the two seas, else I will continue travelling like this for ages.’
So, when both went further (from there), Musa (Alaihi as-Salam) said to his servant, ‘Bring for us our morning meal. Indeed we have been greatly fatigued by this journey.’
He said, ‘See! When we had stopped by that rock, indeed I forgot (to mention) about the fish, and only Shaitan made me forget that I should mention it to you, and (coming to life) it made its way into the sea in a strange way.’
Musa (Alaihi as-Salam) said to him (to Khizr - Rahmat Ullah Alaihi), ‘May I remain with you, if you also teach me some matters of righteousness out of the knowledge taught to you (from Allah).’
So they both went forth until when they embarked on the boat, (Khizr - Rahmat Ullah Alaihi) made a fissure in it (the boat), then he (Musa - Alaihi as-Salam) said, ‘Have you made a fissure in the boat so that those aboard may drown? Surely you have done a very strange thing!’
Then they both went forth until they met a boy (on the way) and he (Khizr - Rahmat Ullah Alaihi) killed him; he said, ‘Have you (wrongfully) killed an innocent person (that is, not in retribution for murder? Indeed this is a terrible act that you have committed.’
He (Musa - Alaihi as-Salam) said, ‘If I question you about anything after this, do not keep me with you. Indeed you have reached the (limit of) excuse from my side.’
Again both went forth, until when they reached the villagers, they requested food from those people, but they refused them hospitality (to offer food). Then they found therein a wall which was about to collapse, so he (the sage) set it up straight (with a signal of his hand). He (Musa - Alaihi as-Salam) said, ‘If you wanted, you could have taken some payment for it.’
That boat belonged to some poor people who laboured on the river. And before them (on the other shore) there was a king who was forcefully seizing every boat, so I wanted to make it defective.
So we wished that their Rabb grants them, in his place, another (child), who is better than him in purity (meaning Deen) and more loving (than him) (for his parents).
And as for that wall, it belonged to two orphan boys dwelling in the city, and their treasure was buried under it, and their father was a very pious person. So your Rabb willed that they reach their maturity and take out their treasure, by the Grace of your Rabb. And I did not perform these acts on my own accord. This is the reality of the events over which you could not have patience.’
