He revealed to you (Sall Allah-o Alaihi wa Sallam) the True Book, (that) confirms the former (Divine) Books; and He revealed the Taurat and the Injeel.
Before it, for the of people; and revealed the Separator (Quran) of Truth from falsehood; guidance indeed, there is severe torment for the people who denied the Ayaat of Allah; and Allah is Dominant, Able to Requite.
It is He, Who revealed the Book to you (Sall Allah-o Alaihi wa Sallam), some of whose Ayaat are categorical, they are the foundations of the Book; and some others are allegorical. So the people in whose hearts is crookedness, they follow the allegorical (so as) to cause dissension thereby and to find out their real interpretation; and none except Allah knows their real interpretation; and those (people) who are well-grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in them; (these) all are from our Rabb.’ And none except the wise take advice.
(Those who say), ‘O our Rabb! You have shown us the path, do not cause crookedness in our hearts after this, and bestow on us Mercy from Your Presence; without doubt, it is You, Who is the Bestower.
Indeed, the people who adopted unbelief, neither their wealth nor their children will be able to save them in the least from Allah; and these people are the fuel of the Fire.
(Their behaviour is) like the behaviour of the people of Fir‘aun and of those before them; they belied Our Ayaat, so Allah seized them for their sins; and Allah is the Giver of severe torment.
Indeed, there is a (great) sign for you in the two groups that faced each other (on the day of Badr). One group was fighting in Allah’s Way; and the other, of unbelievers, was seeing them (the Muslims) with open eyes as twice their number. And Allah strengthens by His Help whom He wills; indeed, in this is a great lesson for men with vision.
Great charm has been placed in people’s love of desire for women and sons, and riches and heaps of gold and silver, and branded horses and cattle, and cultivated fields. (But) this (all) is the possession of the worldly life, and with Allah alone, is an excellent abode.
Say, ‘Should I give you the news of (something) better than these (things), which is with their Rabb for the Allah-conscious: gardens under whose direction streams flow, in which they will dwell forever, and pure wives, and the Good Pleasure of Allah;’ and Allah is watching His slaves.
Allah bears witness that, indeed there is no one worthy of worship except Him. And the angels, and those endued with knowledge who are established in justice (bear witness that), there is no one worthy of worship except Allah; He is the Dominant, the Wise.
Indeed, Islam is the only (true) Deen with Allah; and the people who were given the Book disputed out of rebellion among themselves, after the true knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayaat of Allah, then indeed Allah is Quick in taking account.
And then if they argue with you, say, ‘I have turned my whole self purely towards Allah, and (so have also) those who were my followers.’ And say to the People of the Book and the illiterates (polytheists), ‘Do you also accept?’ So, if they accept, then indeed they too will find the straight path; and if those (people) turn away, indeed your duty is only to convey; and Allah is watching His slaves.
Indeed, the people who disbelieve in the Ayaat of Allah and unlawfully kill the Prophets and kill those who enjoin (the administration of) justice among people, so give them the good news of a painful torment.
Have you not seen those people who were given a (substantial) portion of the Book? (When) they are called towards the Book of Allah so that it judges between them, then one of their groups turns back, and they are (ever) the face-turners.
This is because they say, ‘The Fire will never touch us except for a few days.’ And the slander that they fabricate against the Deen is keeping them in deception.
So, how will it be when We will gather them on the Day about which there is no doubt, and everyone will be recompensed in full for his deeds, and they will not be wronged?
Say, ‘O Allah! You are the Owner of Sovereignty. You may grant kingdom to whom You will and take away kingdom from whom You will, and You may grant honour to whom You will and grant dishonour to whom You will. (All form of) good is in Your Hand. Indeed, You have Power over everything.
You alone enter the night into the day and enter the day into the night; and You alone create the living from the lifeless, and You alone create the lifeless from the living. And You grant sustenance without measure to whom You will.’
The Muslims should not take the unbelievers as friends instead of the Muslims, and whoever does that has nothing (no pledge) with Allah, except (that you do so) for (guarding against) the severe danger you expect from them; and Allah warns you of Himself; and to Allah only is the return.
Say, ‘Whether you conceal whatever is in your breasts or reveal it, Allah knows it. And He knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth; and Allah has Power over everything.’
On the Day when everyone will find the good deeds he performed presented before him, and also (every) evil deed. He will wish (alas!) that there be a great distance between him and it (the evil deed). And Allah warns you of Himself; and Allah is Affectionate to His slaves.
Indeed, Allah chose Adam (Alaihi as-Salam) and Nooh (Alaihi as-Salam) and the family of Ibraheem (Alaihi as-Salam) and the family of Imran over the worlds.
When the wife of Imran said, ‘O my Rabb! Indeed I have freed and dedicated to You whatever is in my womb, so accept it from me. Without doubt, only You are the Hearer, the Knower.’
And when she gave birth, she said, ‘O my Rabb! Indeed, I have given birth to a girl.’ And Allah knows best what she had given birth to; and the boy (that was in her mind) was not like the (that) girl; ‘And I have named her Maryam (Alaiha as-Salam), and indeed I give her and her children into Your Protection, from Shaitan the outcast.’
So her Rabb accepted her with gracious acceptance and brought her (Maryam - Alaiha as-Salam) up in a good way, and made Zakariya (Alaihi as-Salam) her guardian. Whenever Zakariya (Alaihi as-Salam) went to see her at the place of worship, he found food with her. He said, ‘O Maryam (Alaiha as-Salam)! From where did this come to you?’ She said, ‘This is from Allah. Indeed, Allah grants sustenance without measure to whom He wills.’
At that moment Zakariya (Alaihi as-Salam) prayed to his Rabb; he submitted: ‘O my Rabb! Grant me a virtuous offspring from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Hearer of prayer.’
And when he was offering Salah in the place of worship, the angels called him and said, ‘Allah gives you the good news of Yahya (Alaihi as-Salam), who will be a confirmer of the Word of Allah (Allah’s Command), and will be a leader and a controller of his Nafs (against pleasure) and a Prophet from among the righteous.’
He said, ‘O my Rabb! How can I have a son? Indeed old age has overtaken me, and my wife is incapable of bearing children.’ He said, ‘So it is! Allah does what He wills.’
He submitted, ‘O my Rabb! Appoint a sign for me.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will be unable to speak to people for three days, (yes) but only with signals. And do the Zikr of your Rabb in abundance (within your heart) and celebrate His Glory (orally) in the evening and morning.’
And when the angels said, ‘O Maryam (Alaiha as-Salam)! Indeed, Allah has chosen you and made you pure, and elevated you over the women of all the worlds.
These are from the accounts of the Unseen that We reveal to you, and you were not with them when they were casting their pens (in water) as to who would bring up Maryam (Alaiha as-Salam), nor were you with them when they were disputing (among themselves).
When the angels said, ‘O Maryam (Alaiha as-Salam)! Indeed, Allah gives you the good news of a Word from Himself, whose name will be Maseeh Isa (Alaihi as-Salam), the son of Maryam (Alaiha as-Salam). He will be honourable in this world and the Hereafter, and be of the near ones.
She submitted, ‘O my Rabb! How will I have a child, and no man has even touched me?’ He said, ‘Like this, Allah creates what He wills. When He wills to execute an affair, He only commands it ‘Be!’ So it becomes.
And he will be a Messenger to the Bani Isra’eel; (he will say), ‘Without doubt, I have brought (sufficient) proof to you from your Rabb; (so that) I make a model of a bird from clay for you, then I blow in it so it becomes a (live) bird by Allah’s Command; and (I) cure a person born blind and the leper; and (I) raise the dead by Allah’s Command; and (I) inform you what you ate and what you have stored in your homes. Indeed, in this is a very great evidence for you, if you are believers.
And (I) confirm the Taurat, the Book before me, and (I) allow some of the things that had been forbidden to you, and (I) have brought you (a very great) proof from your Rabb, so be conscious of Allah and obey me.
When Isa (Alaihi as-Salam) felt denial in them, he said, ‘Who are my helpers in Allah’s Way?’ The disciples said, ‘We are the helpers for Allah. We believe in Allah, and you be a witness that we are the obedient.
When Allah said, ‘O Isa (Alaihi as-Salam)! Indeed, I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you of the unbelievers; and I will keep the people who will follow you dominant over the unbelievers till the Day of Qiyamah. Then all of you will return to Me, and I will judge between you in the matters that you differed over.
Indeed, with Allah, the example of Isa (Alaihi as-Salam) is like the example of Adam (Alaihi as-Salam); He made him from clay and then commanded him, ‘Be (alive)’, so he became.
Then, if anyone disputes with you in this matter after the (sure) knowledge has come to you, say to them, ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, and our wives and your wives, and we also (come) ourselves and you also (come) yourselves; then beseech (in a manner) so as to invoke Allah’s curse on the liars (in this argument).’
Say, ‘O People of the Book! Come to a word that is common between you and us: that we worship none besides Allah, and we associate nothing as partner with Him, and none of us takes anyone for worship besides Allah.’ Then if they do not accept this, say to them, ‘Be witness that we are the obedient.’
O People of the Book! Why do you dispute about Ibraheem (Alaihi as-Salam), while the Taurat and the Injeel were revealed after him? Do you not have sense?
Yes, you are those people who disputed over a matter about which you had knowledge, but why do you dispute over something about which you have no knowledge at all? And Allah knows and you do not know.
Ibraheem (Alaihi as-Salam) was neither a Jew nor a Christian; but had devoted himself to the One (Allah); he was obedient and was not of the polytheists.
Without doubt, the nearest of people to Ibraheem (Alaihi as-Salam) were those (people) who followed him, and so is this Prophet (Sall Allah-o Alaihi wa Sallam) and those who believe; and Allah is the Friend of the believers.
And a group of the People of the Book wants if only they could lead you astray; and they do not lead anyone astray except themselves; and they have no perception.
And a group of the People of the Book said, ‘Believe at the beginning of the day in that which has been revealed to the Muslims, and refute it at the end of the day, maybe they too, will turn back (from Islam).
And do not obey anyone except the follower of your religion.’ Say, ‘Indeed, Allah’s guidance is the guidance.’ (They say:) This thing that has been granted to you, should be granted to someone else, or (that) they may quarrel with you before your Rabb; say: ‘Indeed, Honour is in Allah’s Hand; He bestows it upon whom He wills, and Allah is Bountiful, Knowing.
And among the People of the Book there is also one whom if you entrust with a treasure for safekeeping, he will return it to you; and there is one whom if you give one dinar for safekeeping would not return it to you unless you stand over him all the time. This is because they say, ‘There will be no blame on us regarding the illiterates.’ And they tell a lie about Allah, and they know it.
Without doubt, the people who take a measly price in exchange for their oaths and the pledges made with Allah, they are the ones who have no portion in the Hereafter; and on the Day of Qiyamah, Allah will neither speak to them nor look at them nor purify them, and for them is a painful torment.
And indeed among them are some people who read the Book, twisting their tongues, so that you think that it is from the (Allah’s) Book, and it is not from the Book; and they say, ‘It is from Allah,’ and it is not from Allah; and they tell a lie about Allah and (this) they know.
It does not befit any man that Allah gives him the Book and Wisdom and Prophethood, then he tells people, ‘Become my slaves instead of Allah’s;’ but (he will rather say), ‘Become Allah’s slaves (Divine scholars), because you teach (Allah’s) Book, and also because you (yourselves) read it.’
And when Allah took the Covenant from the Prophets, ‘When I grant you the Book and Wisdom, and then there comes to you a Messenger who confirms your Book, then you must believe in him and must help him.’ He asked, ‘Do you promise and take My Endorsement over it?’ They said, ‘We promise!’ (Then) He said, ‘Thus, you be witnesses; and I, too, am a Witness with you.’
Do they desire something other than Allah’s Deen (Way)? And whatever is in the heavens or in the earth are willingly or unwillingly obedient (subservient) to Him, and to Him (they) will be returned.
Say, ‘We believe in Allah, and (in) whatever has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Ibraheem and Isma‘eel and Ishaq and Yaqoob (Alaihim as-Salam) and to (his) descendants and (in) what was granted to Musa and Isa (Alaihim as-Salam) and the Prophets by their Rabb. We do not discriminate between them (the Prophets); and we are obedient to Him.’
Why should Allah guide such people who became unbelievers after believing and who (earlier) bore witness that the Messenger is true, and clear proofs had also come to them? And Allah does not guide such wrongdoers.
Indeed, the people who disbelieved after accepting Faith, then kept advancing in their disbelief, their repentance will never be accepted; and those are the people who are astray.
Indeed, the people who disbelieved and died in a state of unbelief, if anyone of them were to offer as much gold as the earth in exchange, it will never be accepted from him. Those are the people for whom is a painful torment; and there is no one to help them.
Every kind of food was allowed to the Bani Isra’eel, except what Yaqoob (Alaihi as-Salam) forbade for himself before the Taurat was revealed. Say (to them), ‘Bring the Taurat, so read it, if you are truthful.’
In it are manifest signs such as the Station of Ibraheem (Alaihi as-Salam); and whoever enters this (blessed House) receives security. And it is Allah’s right over mankind that whoever possesses the means to visit it (the House) should perform the Hajj of the House; and the one who disbelieves (refuses), then indeed, Allah is Independent of the worlds.
Say ‘O People of the Book! Why do you hinder from Allah’s Way the one who has believed? You seek crookedness for this (Way), although you know; and Allah is not Unaware of your deeds.’
O believers! If you obey some of the people from those who were given the Book (earlier), then they will turn you unbelievers, after you have believed.
And how can you disbelieve, when you are those unto (in front of) whom the Ayaat of Allah are recited, and His Messenger is present among you. And whosoever holds fast to Allah has indeed been guided to the straight path.
And hold fast, all of you together, to Allah’s Rope (of guidance), and do not become divided, and remember the Blessing of Allah that is on you: when you were one another’s enemies, He put love in your hearts, so you became brethren by His Favour (Grace and Bounty). And you were on the brink of the pit of Fire (Hell), so He saved you from it. In this manner, does Allah explain His Signs for you, so that you may receive guidance.
And there should be a group among you, which should invite towards goodness, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; and such are the people who will be successful.
And do not be like those people who became divided amongst themselves and differed after the coming of clear Commandments to them; and there is a very great torment for such people.
On the Day when some faces will be white and some faces will be black; thus (it will be said to) those people whose faces will be black, ‘Did you become unbelievers after your having believed? So savour the (taste) of the torment for the unbelief that you had been practising.’
You are the best community that has been raised for people; you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. And if the People of the Book had believed, it would have been better for them. Some among them are believers, and majority of them are evildoers (unbelievers).
They will never be able to cause you any harm except for a minor hurt. And if they fight you, they will turn their backs on you; then they will not get any support also (from anywhere).
Disgrace has been imposed upon them wherever they are found, except that there be some grounds from Allah and some grounds from people, and those people were caught up in Allah’s wrath, and destitution was imposed upon them. This was because they disbelieved in the Ayaat of Allah and killed the Prophets (Alaihi as-Salam) wrongfully; this all was because they used to disobey and transgress.
Not all among the People of the Book are alike; there is a group (among them) which is firmly adhering (to Allah’s Commandments), recites the Ayaat of Allah in the hours of the night and prostrates itself (before Allah).
They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and hasten in performance of good deeds. And they are of the righteous people.
Without doubt, those people who practised unbelief, their wealth or their children will never avail them against Allah; and they are the inmates of Hell, they will abide in it forever.
The likeness of what they spend during this worldly life is as the likeness of a strong wind wherein is intense cold, it smites the harvest of such people who have wronged themselves, thus destroys it; and Allah did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
O believers! Do not befriend anyone intimately other than your own folk, as those people (the unbelievers) spare no effort in causing you loss. They want to hurt you. Indeed, malice has been exposed by their mouths, and that which is concealed in their hearts is much greater (than this). Indeed, We have explained the signs clearly for you, if you have understanding.
Yes, you are the very people who love them, and they love you not, and you (even) believe in all the Books. And when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ and when they are alone, they bite their fingers at you in rage; say (to them), ‘Die in your rage. Indeed, Allah knows the secrets of the hearts.’
If you receive some good it grieves them, and if some ill befalls you they rejoice at it; and if you observe patience and adopt Allah-consciousness, their deceit will not be able to harm you at all; without doubt Allah surrounds their deeds.
Yes, of course! If you observe patience and remain conscious of (Allah), and they (the unbelievers) attack you suddenly (fiercely), then your Rabb will help you with five thousand such angels who will have special marks.
And Allah has made this help a good news for you, and so that your hearts may be at rest with it; and help is only from Allah, (Who is) the Dominant, the Wise.
You have no authority in this matter; whether He (Allah) shows kindness to them or punishes them; without doubt, they (the unbelievers) are wrongdoers.
And whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth (all) belongs to Allah alone; He may forgive whom He wills and may punish whom He wills; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
And advance hastily towards the forgiveness of your Rabb and towards Paradise, whose width equals the heavens and earth, (which) has been prepared for the Allah-conscious.
The people who spend (in Allah’s Way) in prosperity and (also) in adversity and control their anger and forgive people; and Allah loves the benevolent.
And the people who, when they commit an immoral act or wrong themselves, perform Allah’s Zikr, thus seek forgiveness for their sins; and who except Allah can forgive sins? And they do not intentionally repeat that (mistake) which they have committed.
It is they whose reward is forgiveness from their Rabb, and gardens (Paradise) under whose direction streams flow; they will dwell in them forever. And what an excellent reward for the workers!
If you have received some injury (hurt), without doubt, those people have also received similar injury (hurt); and We rotate these days between people, and so that Allah may distinguish (know) the believers and make (some of you) witnesses (Shaheed); and Allah does not befriend the wrongdoers.
Do you think that you will enter Paradise even though Allah has not yet (openly) known those among you who do Jihad nor known those who observe patience?
And Hazrat Muhammad (Sall Allah-o Alaihi wa Sallam) is but a Messenger of Allah. Certainly, (many) Messengers have passed before him; thus, if he dies or is martyred, will you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will in no way harm Allah; and Allah will soon reward the thankful.
And death cannot come to any person without Allah’s Command; (its) specified time is inscribed; and whoever desires the reward (of his deeds) in the world, We will give it to him there, and whoever wants the reward in the Hereafter, We will give it to him there; and We will soon grant (excellent) reward to the thankful.
And there have been many Prophets alongside whom fought many Men of Allah; they neither slackened nor showed weakness for whatever they encountered in Allah’s Way, nor did they get subdued (by the unbelievers); and Allah loves the patient.
And nothing poured forth from their tongues except that they said (prayed), ‘O our Rabb! Forgive us our sins and (forgive) the excesses we have committed in our deeds and keep us steadfast and grant us dominance over the unbelievers.’
Soon We will settle (your) awe in the hearts of the unbelievers, because they committed polytheism with respect to Allah, for which no proof has been sent down, and their abode is Hell and it is a bad place for the wrongdoers.
And indeed Allah made good His Promise with you when you were killing them (the unbelievers) by His Command; till you yourselves weakened and began disputing the order amongst yourselves and you did not comply, after He (Allah) showed you what you had desired. Some of you were those who desired the world and some were those who were desirous of the Hereafter. Then Allah turned you away from (fighting) them, so that He may try you. And without doubt, He forgave you; and Allah is Extremely Gracious to the believers.
(And remember that time) when you kept climbing and would not look back at anyone, and the Messenger was calling you from your rear. Then (Allah) gave you grief upon grief (in retribution); so that you may neither grieve after the thing that had escaped your hands nor for that (calamity) which befell you; and Allah is Aware of what you do.
Then after this grief Allah sent down tranquillity upon you: slumber (which was a kind of sleep) that overcame a party of you; and some of the people were those who were concerned about their lives; they were entertaining untrue thoughts about Allah, (which was a mere) thought of ignorance. They were saying, ‘Do we also have the authority of making some decision?’ Say, ‘Without doubt, the whole matter is in Allah’s Control.’ They keep concealed in their hearts what they do not reveal to you. They say, ‘If we had any say in this decision, we would not have been killed here.’ Say, ‘Even if you had been in your homes, yet those for whom slaying had been decreed would certainly have set out for their place of slaying;’ and so that Allah may try the matters in your hearts (breasts) and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah knows well the matters of the hearts.
Without doubt, those people among you who turned back on the day when the two parties fought with each other, surely, Shaitan made them stumble due to some of their deeds; and indeed Allah forgave them. Without doubt, Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
O believers! Do not become like those unbelievers who say about their (believing) brethren when they set out for travel through the land or go out to fight for Allah, ‘If they had remained with us, they would neither have died nor been killed.’ (This is so) that Allah may make this saying as regret in their hearts. And only Allah gives life and (only Allah) gives death; and Allah is watching what you do.
So by some Mercy of Allah, you are very gentle with them; and had you been harsh, hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So excuse them and seek forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you have taken a firm decision (about some matter) then put your trust in Allah. Without doubt, Allah loves those who trust Him.
If Allah helps you no one can overcome you, and if He (Allah) forsakes you, then, who is there, after Him, to help you? And in Allah should the believers trust.
And it can never happen that a Prophet breaches trust; and whoever breaches a trust will produce his misappropriated item on the Day of Qiyamah. Then everyone will be repaid (recompensed) in full for his deeds and they will not be dealt with unjustly.
Can a person who follows the Pleasure of Allah be like the one who is caught up in Allah’s Displeasure and his place is Hell? And that is a very bad abode.
Allah has indeed bestowed a (very great) favour upon the believers, when He appointed a Messenger from among themselves, who recites His Ayaat to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Book and Wisdom; although before this they were clearly astray.
(Was it not so, that) whenever you were afflicted with distress, you said, ‘Wherefrom is this?’ Though without doubt, you had also inflicted twice as much hurt on them (in the Battle of Badr). Say, ‘This is from yourselves.’ Indeed, Allah has Power over everything.
And may also observe the hypocrites; and it was said to them, ‘Come and fight in Allah’s Way or repel (the enemy).’ They said, ‘Had we known how to fight, we would certainly have remained by you.’ That day they were nearer to unbelief than to Faith. They utter from their mouths that which is not in their hearts; and Allah knows very well what they conceal.
Those people who themselves stayed behind (did not participate) say about their brethren (those who sacrificed their lives), ‘Had they listened to us they would not have been killed.’ Say, ‘Then avert death from yourselves, if you are truthful.’
They are delighted with what Allah has bestowed upon them by His Grace, also rejoicing for those people who are remaining behind them and have not yet joined them (as martyrs), that (on the Day of Qiyamah) they will neither feel any fear nor will they feel sorry.
Those people who even after being wounded, responded to the Command of Allah and the Messenger; there is a very great reward for those of them who adopt goodness and Allah-consciousness.
Those who, when told by the people (unbelievers), ‘Without doubt, people have gathered resources against you, so fear them,’ their Faith became even stronger (refreshed) and they said, ‘Allah is Sufficient for us and He is the Best Manager of affairs.’
And they returned (safely) with Allah’s Bounty and Grace; they encountered no unpleasantness and they followed Allah’s Pleasure; and Allah is the Owner of Abundant Grace.
Do not be grieved on account of the people who hasten towards unbelief (towards transgression); assuredly, they cannot harm Allah in the least; Allah desires not to give them any portion in the Hereafter; and for them is a great torment.
Let not the unbelievers suppose that the leave We keep granting them is good for them; no doubt, We grant them leave so that they may commit even more sins; and for them is a humiliating torment.
It does not befit Allah to leave the believers in the state you are in, until He separates the evil from the good; and it does not befit Allah to inform you about the Unseen, but Allah selects from among His Messengers whom He wills. Therefore, believe in Allah and His Messengers; and if you believe and adopt Allah-consciousness, then there is a great reward for you.
Let not those people who are close-fisted about the wealth that Allah has granted them, think that it is good for them; rather, it is very bad for them. On the Day of Qiyamah, they will be made to wear yokes of the things which they were close-fisted about; and Allah is the Inheritor of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Aware of your deeds.
Without doubt, Allah has heard those who say, ‘Allah is poor and we are rich.’ We will keep, duly recorded, their saying, as well as their unjust killing of the Prophets; and We will say, ‘Taste the torment of the Fire.
Those people who say, ‘Undoubtedly, Allah has commanded us not to believe in any Messenger until he brings us a sacrifice that is consumed by fire.’ Say, ‘Indeed, the Messengers before me brought clear proofs and also that (miracle) which you say. So why did you kill them, if you are truthful?’
Then if they do not accept you as true, assuredly many Messengers before you who brought (to them) proofs, scriptures and a luminous Book, were also not accepted as true.
Every soul has to taste death; and indeed you will be paid full recompense (for your deeds) on the Day of Qiyamah. So whoever is saved from the Fire and is entered in Paradise, he surely attained his goal; and the life of the world is merely an illusionary possession.
However, you will certainly be tried in your property and lives, and you will certainly hear much grievous talk from those who were given the Book before you (People of the Book) and from the polytheists; and if you remain patient and adopt consciousness of Allah, then surely these are deeds of great courage.
And when Allah took the pledge from the People of the Book that you will make known to people (what is written in it) and will not hide it. However, they cast it behind their backs and obtained a petty price (property and wealth) in exchange for it; thus, extremely evil is that which they acquire.
Do not think that the people who feel pleased with their (evil) deeds, and want to be (wrongfully) praised for what they have not done - thus, do not think that they will escape the torment; and for them is a painful torment.
Those who do Allah’s Zikr standing, sitting and lying (in all states), and ponder upon the creation of the heavens and the earth. (They say) ‘O our Rabb! You did not create (all) this without purpose. Hallowed are You; so save us from the torment of the Fire.
O our Rabb! Without doubt, we heard a Caller who was calling to the Faith: ‘Believe in your Rabb,’ so we believed. O our Rabb! So forgive us our sins and remove from us our evils and grant us death with the virtuous.
O our Rabb! And grant us all those things, which You have promised us through Your Messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Qiyamah. Without doubt, You never break Your promise.’
So their Rabb accepted their supplication: ‘I will not waste the deeds of any worker, male or female among you; you are one from another. Thus, those people who emigrated and were driven out of their homes and were afflicted in My Way and they fought and were killed, I will certainly remove their evils from them, and will definitely enter them in such gardens under whose direction streams flow. This is the reward from Allah; and with Allah is the excellent reward.’
But, for the people who are conscious of their Rabb, are gardens with streams that flow under their direction; they will dwell in them forever. This is (their) hospitality from their Rabb; and that which is with Allah is excellent for the virtuous.
And without doubt, certain People of the Book are such that they believe in Allah and (in that) which is revealed to you and (in that) which was revealed to them. They humble themselves before Allah, and do not exchange the Ayaat of Allah for a petty price (worldly wealth). These are the people whose reward is with their Rabb; without doubt, Allah is Quick in taking account.
